Could this training be for you?

The words “carer”, “personal assistant” and “individual employer” may sound formal. Here’s what they mean in everyday life.

What is a carer?

What is a personal assistant (PA)?

What is a personal assistant (PA)?

An unpaid carer supports a family member, partner or friend who needs that support because of disability, illness, mental health needs or changes associated with ageing.

You might help with appointments, meals, communication, personal care or day-to-day routines. You may simply think of yourself as a parent, partner, relative or friend, rather than a carer.

Recognising this role can help you find relevant information and support.

What is a personal assistant (PA)?

What is a personal assistant (PA)?

A PA is paid to provide care and support directly for an individual or family. Some PAs are employed by the person or family, while others are self-employed and contracted by them.

The role varies from person to person. It may include supporting communication, daily routines, personal care, getting out into the community or taking part in activities that matter to someone.

What is an individual employer?

What is a personal assistant (PA)?

What is an individual employer?

If you employ your own care and support staff, you are an individual employer. You might pay for this through direct payments, a personal health budget or your own money.

You may also be a family member arranging this support on someone’s behalf.
